![]() ![]() The drama of two mortal enemies is claustrophobic, like wild animals trapped in a cage, from which neither will escape alive. Neville Brand and George Takei turn in two of the most riveting performances that I can recall ever seeing in a television play. I consider this to be the most unpleasant episode of TZ that I have seen, and yet perhaps also the best acted of them all. In the Japanese culture, spiritual redemption comes from the Sword. If he felt guilt and/or wanted redemption (as he evidently does), then he would have accomplished it via harakiri. Instead, what he should have done is to use the Sword to commit harakiri. At the end, we see Takamuri commit suicide by leaping to his death. Presumably the Sword which possesses him is inhabited by the spirit of a Samurai. But in Japan, the Sword is both weapon and spirituality.Īnd so we come to this TZ episode with George Takei's character of Takamuri. In European culture, the Sword is simply a weapon. How the Japanese regard the Sword is entirely different than how it is regarded in European culture. This shows you the extent to which the Japanese revere the Sword. Integral to Shintoism is that one of its 3 sacred objects is a Sword. But Wicca does not have huge temples which are respected by the government, as compared to what we see in Shintoism. ![]() Of course, some of you might argue against Shinto by saying that the Western religion of Wicca still survives too, with its animism. But strangely in Japan, the animistic Shinto still survives widespread to this day even despite the modernism of Japan. It is a religion of animism (polytheistic worship of nature-spirits) which is unusual for its kind, because animism becomes obsolete when the society becomes modern. Before I pinpoint specifically why, let me first note that the religion which is indigenous to Japan is Shintoism. Its fresh approach offers a new twist on science fiction’s strengths of exploring very human themes of loss, grief in an unexpected and thought-provoking way.Much as I appreciated seeing George Takei here, what disappointed me was the sadly lacking knowledge of the author as far as the culture of the Japanese Sword, and how the Samurai Sword was treated in this episode. The world of ‘Encounter’ is a nod back to classic sci-fi movies of the ’70s and ’80s. Salamoff had this to say about the project: ![]() Ward, Cheryl Texiera, Christopher Showerman, and the legendary Tom Atkins ( THE FOG, HALLOWEEN III, NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, etc.) Hemsworth is joined in the cast by Anna Hutchison (pictured below), Glenn Keogh, Vincent M. The Beyond Casual Media production is expected to start filming in Georgia this August. But with the government on their tail, time is running out to ascertain the alien’s true intentions. When they bring the otherworldly being home, they soon discover that it holds even greater secrets than they could imagine. ![]() #The encounter twilight zone seriesWritten by Salamoff and inspired by the classic anthology series The Twilight Zone, ENCOUNTER centers onĪ group of friends making a remarkable discovery in a rural field - a crashed spacecraft with a survivor. Luke Hemsworth's alien experience will come in the appropriately titled ENCOUNTER, the feature directorial debut of Paul J. With the THOR movies, THE AVENGERS, and INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, it has been established that Hemsworth brothers Chris and Liam are capable of handling encounters with extraterrestrials, and now their older brother Luke Hemsworth, who you may know from the HBO series Westworld, has signed up to have a close encounter of his own. ![]()
